ABSTRACT



The current buzz phrase in the hypernet is the Internet of Things (IOT) and in the automation world this has metamorphosed into the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) or Industrie 4.0. During casual discussions IOT, IIOT, Industrie 4.0 are many times considered synonyms, however the context and application base while having many overlaps has different viewpoints as well.

This talk is part 1 of 3 part talk delving into the benefits and applicability of these technologies, their similarities and differences, and finally into the implementation details. Part 1 of the talk will primarily focus on the need of these three technologies and the convergence and divergence of the triad. Parts 2 and 3 will get into implementation details.

Sunil has 25+ years of process engineering, product development, technology/engineering management and process analytics experience with well-known organizations like GE, Kvaerner Powergas, IIT Bombay, etc.

Presently he is involved in start-ups related to control and optimization of processes: Communications, Diagnostics, and Controls and a consultant for innovation, product and technology development. Sunil is a faculty for courses on Advanced Process Control, Optimization and Innovation.

At the time of leaving GE, Sunil was global product Leader for controls product line related to rotating machinery like Gas Turbines, Steam Turbines, Compressors, etc. As a product leader Sunil was the interface between the technical development team, marketing and sales teams and customers. Prior to the product line leader role, Sunil set up the electromechanical controls lab at the Global Research Centre at GE India Technology Center. This lab worked on multi-disciplinary research areas like transportation, energy, water, healthcare, etc. working on new technologies and innovation for state of the art product development.

Sunil completed his PhD in Control and Systems Engineering from IIT, Bombay and Chemical Engineering from NIT, Rourkela. Sunil has over 8 patents filed as co-inventor and is TRIZ Level-2 certified.
